Long-time member Piers Jenkins has been named as the next president of Mill Hill Village Sports Club.
Jenkins, an active member of Mill Hill Village since 1988, took up the post on September 1.
Jenkins, pictured in action above, formed part of the selector panel for a recent special feature put together by millhillvillagecricketclub.co.uk for President's Day 2023 in which we asked past and present club presidents to submit lists of their all-time favourite players.
Here, we reveal Jenkins' Mill Hill Village Cricket Club all-time XI, with comments on each player by Jenkins himself.
1. Denis David
Huge accumulator of runs in his day, and I had the privilege of playing with him a few times in the late 1980s and early '90s. His daughter started playing for a year or two, so that was groundbreaking. When Denis retired, she disappeared!
2. Dan Potter (vice-captain)
A modern-day player with many years left in him and has scored heavily for quite a few years now. He adds medium-pace bowling to this side as well.
3. Matt Brewster
Scoring effectively and quickly in the 1990s. Part of the 1990 double-winning team.
4. Richard Bunning
Another heavy scorer for the Village back when I had hair!
5. Scott Brewster
Another high-scoring batsman, along with being magnificent behind the stumps, so can be the backup keeper. Brother of Matt.
6. Felix Charles
Was in the 1st XI for years, batting around number five, six or seven, and was daft enough to always field at silly mid-off. Proper bucket hands fielder, the best I’ve seen, and could run like the wind before his knees went.
7. Gary Topp (c)
Fast bowler who terrorised the Middlesex leagues for years with his very accurate hostile bowling. Could bat a bit also.
8. George Hurd
“Best slow left-arm bowler in Middlesex bar Phil Edmonds,” said Bruce Maclaughlin to me at the turn of the century. There have been some fine young spin bowlers since George, but in my opinion, none of them could match his consistency.
9. Wayne Sizer
Even faster than Toppy and his sixes went a long way! A great bowler not to face, he ended up playing for years in Chalky’s football team - and again I was quite happy not to have to tackle him.
10. Dipesh Jadav
From a proper cricketing family, many of whom have played for the Village. A left-arm spinner who captained with distinction the Colts 20 years or so ago and was soon in the adult teams, and soon in the 1s. He spun the ball loads and always had a smile on his face. Finchley CC pinched him, but he still played many games with distinction.
11. Steve Pullen (wk)
Absolute maverick keeper, and this team is batting with 10 players (sorry Steve). I once opened the batting with him in the 3s and I was out for 32, and Steve was 0 not out! He was soon impossible to ignore as a wicket-keeper and was the first choice in the 1s for years and years. Hardly dropped anything, and his stumping was so quick. He would probably stand up to Mark Wood! He is currently in poor health, and we wish him well.
