Volunteers needed to help get grounds ready for cricket season

MHVCC Reporters14 Feb - 10:43

Save the date: Our first work party of the year takes place on March 16

'Attending a designated pre-season work party will qualify members for the discounted annual subs rate for 2026'
- Director of Cricket Phil Smith

Mill Hill Village Cricket Club members should attend our first pre-season work party on Sunday, March 16, to help with crucial tasks around the clubhouse and ground.

Like all clubs playing recreational cricket, MHVCC is powered by volunteers. And like other clubs, ground maintenance is crucial, and we need the help of as many volunteers as possible pre-season so that our playing facilities are in the best shape possible.

Jobs include ditch clearing, litter picking, painting, and boundary tidying, among many other tasks. Volunteers should wear sturdy footwear and are advised to bring gloves.

In the runup to the cricket season, the club can confirm work parties will take place on the following dates, from 10am until 4pm:

:: Sun March 16
:: Sun March 23
:: Sun March 30
:: Sun April 6
:: Sun April 13

Director of Cricket Phil Smith said: “Mill Hill Village Cricket Club is an organisation run almost exclusively by volunteers. No one gets paid to play, coach, undertake committee work or carry out ground maintenance work. We rely on our dedicated members' goodwill, skills and services. We outsource the specialist care and management of our sports pitches and some clubhouse cleaning, but most activities are kept in-house and many volunteer hours are undertaken. This is why we always seek to lighten the load a little and spread the volunteering burden around as many people as possible.”

To encourage as many volunteers as possible, the club’s annual subscription charge will be £50 higher for anyone who does not undertake volunteer work during the 2025 season. Attending a designated pre-season work party (in full) will qualify members for the discounted annual subscription rate for 2026.

“This is a proper incentive to lend a hand, so we hope for some decent turnouts at the pre-season work parties,” Smith added.

Club members and supporters can simply turn up on the above dates to volunteer and tasks will be assigned by our Amenities Director Pete Jaffe.
